OPERATIONAL OPTIMIZATION OF PILOT SCALE MEMBRANE BIOREACTOR TREATING MIXED INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER AND DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO MEMBRANE SURFACE CLEANING SYSTEMS
Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the optimum operation parameters of pilot scale membrane bioreactor treating mixed industrial wastewater. In the scope of this research, pilot scale plant was built in Gebze Organized Industrial Zone Domestic and Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant and operated. MLSS concentration, filtration/cleaning durations and effect of adding poly alumina chloride (PAC) on flux were investigated in pilot plant scale. At the same time, alternative membrane cleaning strategies were investigated and their effectiveness were compared to the traditional membrane cleaning method of air scouring. Air scouring, vibration, ultrasonic cleaning system, chemical enhanced backwash were selected as fouling control strategies. Alternative methods are selected as induced ultrasound, vibration, and combination of vibration with the traditional air scouring and chemical cleaning. As a control group, traditional air scouring is selected. For all methodologies flat sheet membranes are used. Since ceramic is one of the membrane materials having high sound-reflecting properties thus, high cleaning efficiency and tests indicated that ultrasonic cleaning at 28 kHz damages membranes, ceramic membranes are used for two months for ultrasound application. In conclusion, it is seen that MLSS concentration of 12000 mg/L gives expected results on flux. In the terms of filtration/ cleaning duration, it is seen that 15 min filtration and 5 min cleaning duration is more effective. Because of the mixed industrial wastewater, foaming is seen in MBR and both prevention of foaming and improvement of flux is seen with adding of PAC. This research also proved that the most efficient cleaning strategy to control membrane fouling is that the chemical enhanced backwash together with constantly induced air scouring and vibration.
