EFFECT OF STEEL AND SYNTHETIC FIBERS ON FRESH AND HARDENED PROPERTIES OF SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE
Abstract
Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a special kind of concrete that can fill the mold with its own weight without any segregation and requiring any vibration. In this study, the effects of steel and synthetic fibers on fresh and hardened concrete properties of self-compacting concretes were investigated. To this end, one control mix, a total of 13 different concrete mixes were prepared. The water/binder ratio was taken as 0.40 for all mixes. The steel and synthetic fibers were added to the concrete mixes as 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75% by volume. The target compressive strength of the control concrete was determined as 40 MPa. In order to investigate the fresh concrete characteristics, slump flow, V funnel and L box tests were performed. To determine hardened concrete properties, the compressive, splitting tensile and flexural strength tests were performed. It was determined that as the fiber ratio increased, the workability properties of the SCC were adversely affected. In addition to this, although there was a limited increase in the compressive strength of the concrete, significant increases in the tensile and bending strengths of the concrete were obtained.
