ENERGY OPTIMIZATION OF A COPPER/ZINC GRINDING CIRCUIT
Abstract
Since the
comminution process is the most energy consuming part of the whole mining
operation, it is well known that energy optimization can be provided with the
aid of modelling and simulation studies. Within the scope of the study, the
simulation studies performed for wet grinding circuit processing chalcopyrite,
sphalerite and pyrite minerals are presented. Initially, sampling campaign was
arranged around the circuit that consisted of two ball mills and a hydrocyclone
cluster system. Then the size distributions together with the chemical assays
were determined. Afterwards, mass balancing around the circuit was performed
and the model structures of the equipment were developed. Model of the whole
circuit was used to simulate different operating conditions. Initially, solid
content of the primary ball mill was adjusted and apex/vortex geometries of the
hydrocyclone were redesigned. As a consequence of the simulations, the dry
tonnage of the feed to the circuit was increased from 172.5 t/h to 190 t/h and
then 195 t/h that corresponds to increase by 10% and 13%. Finally, the second
option was chosen for the plant and the real production rate was increased to
195 t/h.
