This study examines the ideological and practical influence of Robert Owen on the development of the British trade union movement in the early 19th century. Confronted by the arduous working conditions that characterised the Industrial Revolution, the working class commenced the exploration of diverse forms of organisation, a period during which Owen’s utopian approach to social reform garnered significant prominence. Owen’s philosophical standpoint was underpinned by the conviction that human nature could be shaped through education and environment. Consequently, he advocated for the establishment of cooperatives and the promotion of trade union formation, with the objective of achieving a more equitable life for workers.
The present study explores the contributions of Owen to collective labour action, with a particular focus on initiatives such as the Grand National Consolidated Trades Union. The study also explores the repercussions of his repudiation of individualism and his advocacy for collective welfare within the emerging union structures of the period. Even though Owen’s ideas and initiatives did not ultimately result in long-term institutional success, they played a crucial role in establishing the moral foundations of British trade unionism. In this context, the paper aims to present the impact of Owenism on the evolution of the labour movement through a clear and historically grounded perspective, rather than through complex theoretical analysis.
