THE EFFECT OF HOUSEWIVES' EDUCATION LEVELS ON HEALTH LITERACY: A STUDY ON HOUSEWIVES LIVING IN ISTANBUL

Öz

Gerek günümüzün teknolojik gelişimi gerekse bilgiye kolay erişim, bireylerin hastalıkları hakkında bilgi sahibi olmalarını ve kendilerine neyin iyi geldiğini araştırabilmelerini sağlamaktadır. Sağlık hizmetlerinde kalite kavramı da bireylerin sağlıkları ile ilgili aldıkları söz konusu kararlara bağlı olarak kendini geliştirmektedir. Ancak bireylerin sağlıkları ile ilgili bu kararları ne kadar iyi alabilecekleri, önemli bir kavramdır. Bu anlamda bireyin doğru karar vermesi ve sağlık bilgilerine kolayca ulaşabilmesi, ulaşılan bilgiyi doğru anlama ve yorumlama anlamına gelen sağlık okuryazarlığı ile de ilişkilidir. Araştırmada sağlık okuryazarlığı ile okuryazarlık düzeyi arasındaki ilişki araştırılmıştır. Sağlık okuryazarlığının tespiti için İstanbul ilinde 5 ilçede 25-50 yaş aralığında toplam 250 ev hanımına kolayda örnekleme yöntemi ile anket uygulanmıştır. Araştırmanın hipotezinin analizi dışında, katılımcıların dengeli bir yaşam sürdürebilme durumları, genel sağlık durumları, aile hekimine yönelik davranışları, ilaç kullanım alışkanlıkları, temel sağlık bilgileri, hastalık durumunda yapılacaklar, tedavi yöntemleri, hastalıkları önleme ve sağlık okuryazarlığına ihtiyaç duyma durumu analiz edilmiştir.

Öz

Both today’s technological development and easy access to information allow individuals to have knowledge about their diseases and to prove what is good for them. The concept of quality in health care service also improves itself depending on the mentioned decisions taken by the individuals about their health. However, it is an important concept about how well individuals can take these decisions about their health. In this sense, taking correct decision for the individual and accessing the health information easily is associated with the health literacy which also means to understand and interpret the accessed information correctly. In the study, the correlation between the health literacy and literacy level was investigated. For the detection of health literacy, a survey was applied with convenience sampling method to a total of 250 housewives in the age range of 25-50 years in 5 districts in Istanbul. Except for the analysis of the hypothesis of the study, the status of the participants to lead a balanced life, their general health statuses, their behaviors about the family physician, medication use habits, basic health information, actions in case of illness, methods of preventing diseases and status of needing health literacy were analyzed.
