THE EFFECT OF HOUSEWIVES' EDUCATION LEVELS ON HEALTH LITERACY: A STUDY ON HOUSEWIVES LIVING IN ISTANBUL

Öz

Both today’s technological development and easy access to information allow individuals to have knowledge about their diseases and to prove what is good for them. The concept of quality in health care service also improves itself depending on the mentioned decisions taken by the individuals about their health. However, it is an important concept about how well individuals can take these decisions about their health. In this sense, taking correct decision for the individual and accessing the health information easily is associated with the health literacy which also means to understand and interpret the accessed information correctly. In the study, the correlation between the health literacy and literacy level was investigated. For the detection of health literacy, a survey was applied with convenience sampling method to a total of 250 housewives in the age range of 25-50 years in 5 districts in Istanbul. Except for the analysis of the hypothesis of the study, the status of the participants to lead a balanced life, their general health statuses, their behaviors about the family physician, medication use habits, basic health information, actions in case of illness, methods of preventing diseases and status of needing health literacy were analyzed.
