Determination of Nurses' Opinions on Retirement Life: A University Hospital Example

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine career nurses' approaches to the phenomenon of retirement, their opinions about post-retirement life and their thoughts about the retirement preparation program. Method: The descriptive and cross-sectional study sample consisted of 300 nurses (n=300) over the age of 35 working in a university hospital, selected by stratified and sampling method. The question airs, which were based on the literature and prepared by their researcher, were applied face-to-face after obtaining the consent of the voluntary participants. The data obtained from the participants in the study were statistically analyzed with the IBM-SPSS Statistics 21 program. Descriptive analyses (number, percentage, mean and standard deviation), nonparametric comparison analyses (chi-square) and correlation (Pearson Correlation) analyses were used in the evaluation of the data. Results: Findings obtained from the study: It was determined that nurses did not feel ready for retirement (53.3%) and did not plan for retirement (60.7%). (81.7%) nurses interpreted retirement as “plenty of time to spend with my family” (63.7%), “time to take care of myself and my hobbies” (62%), “being alone” (6.7%), “being useless” (5.3%). It was found that the nurses did not plan to work after retirement (55%), and those who wanted to work wanted to participate in a retirement preparation program in their field of experience or as an educator for financial reasons (80%). While no significant differences were found in the comparisons between the unit, position, staff, educational status, age and marital status of the nurse sand their feeling of readiness for retirement, the relationship between the time they had to work to deserve retirement (10.35 years) and the time they thought of working was highly significant (p>0.005), positive and strong (r=0.855). Conclusion: It can be suggested that studies with large samples should be conducted to evaluate the perspective of nurses on retirement and to develop new strategies to meet the expectations of experienced nurses to continue in the institution.

Hemşirelerin Emeklilik Yaşantısına İlişkin Görüşlerinin Belirlenmesi: Bir Üniversitesi Hastanesi Örneği

Öz

AMAÇ: Ülkemizde hemşireler mesleğe farklı eğitim seviyelerinde, erken yaşta ve diğer mesleklerden farklı çalışma koşullarında başlamaktadırlar. Bu çalışmada; kariyerlerinin ortasında hemşirelerin emeklilik olgusuna yaklaşımları, emeklilik sonrası yaşamla ilgili görüşleri ve emekliliğe hazırlık programı konusundaki düşüncelerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. YÖNTEM: Tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel tipteki araştırma örneklemini 35 yaş üstü bir üniversite hastanesinde görevli, tabakalı rastgele örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilen 300 hemşireden (n:300) oluşmaktadır. Literatüre dayalı araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan anketler gönüllü katılımcıların onamları alındıktan sonra uygulandı. Araştırmada katılımcıdan elde edilen veriler, IBM-SPSS Statistics 21 programı ile istatistiksel açıdan danışmanlık alınarak analiz edilmiştir. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde betimleyici analizler (sayı, yüzde, ortalama ve standart sapma), parametrik olmayan karşılaştırma analizleri (ki kare) ile ilişki arayıcı (Pearson Korelasyon) analizler kullanılmıştır. BULGULAR: Araştırma bulguları doğrultusunda, hemşirelerin kendini emekliliğe hazır hissetmedikleri (%53,3), emeklilik planı yapmadıkları (%60,7) belirlenmiştir (%81,7). Hemşireler emekliliği, ‘ailemle geçirebileceğim bol zaman’ (%63,7), ‘kendimle ve hobilerimle ilgilenme zamanı’ (%62), ‘yalnız kalma’ (%6,7), ‘işe yaramama’ (%5,3) olarak yorumlamıştır. Hemşirelerin emekliliği hak ettikten sonra çalışmayı düşünmediği (%55), çalışmak isteyenlerin maddi nedenlerle deneyimli oldukları alanda veya eğitimci olarak, emekliliğe hazırlık programına katılmak istedikleri (%80) saptanmıştır. Hemşirelerin çalıştıkları birimi, pozisyonu, kadrosu, eğitim durumu, yaşı, medeni durumu ile kendilerini emekliliğe hazır hissetmeleri arasında yapılan karşılaştırmalarda anlamlı farklar bulunmazken, emekliliği hak etmek için çalışması gereken süre (10,35 yıl) ve çalışmayı düşündükleri süre arasındaki ilişkinin çok ileri derecede anlamlı (p, <001), pozitif yönlü ve güçlü olduğu (r=,855) belirlenmiştir. SONUÇ: Hemşirelerin emekliliğe bakış açısını değerlendirmek, deneyimli hemşirelerin kurumda devam etmeleri için beklentileri karşılayacak yeni stratejiler geliştirilmesi için büyük örneklemli araştırmaların yapılması gerekliliği önerilebilir.
