Artificial Intelligence and Dark Side of Communication: Deepfake As A Weapon of Cyber-Harassment

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 4 Sayı: 1, 49 - 61, 30.06.2025

Öz

Artificial Intelligence technologies make individuals’ lives easier, but they have negative effects such as cyber-harassment. Due to its’ nature, communication cannot always be direct, positive and healthy but as a result of pervasiveness of artificial intelligence technologies into interpersonal communication, it has begun to change and transform. There is no doubt that, this change and transformation in communication is significant in cyber-harassment. When studies on cyber harassment are examined, it is seen that individuals pursue face-to-face violence to the digital environment or vice versa, and perpetrators bully others through insults or humiliating behaviors. However, with the rapid development in artificial intelligence technologies, cyber-harassment is now implemented through completely fake images and Deepfake videos created only with people's photos and voices, without insults or verbal violence against to the individuals. Especially with revenge videos and fake videos that target celebrities or politicians, individuals’ dignity and privacy are damaged. Based on those realities about artificial intelligence technologies, in this research, Deepfake Technologies role as weapon of cyber-harassment will be evaluated through descriptive framework in the context of human-computer interaction and communication.
