Writing History at the Ottoman Court: Editing the Past, Fashioning the Future
Öz
A collection of essays treating Ottoman primary sources in detail is particularly welcome at a time when thematically and chronologically driven monographs dominate Anglophone academic publishing. Linguistic and paleographical obstacles prevent non-specialist historians from gaining familiarity with Ottoman sources, and for that reason this volume contains particularly valuable insights. In spite of the fact that few manuscripts survived from the first three centuries of the empire, there is still a dearth of scholarly output regarding the authorship, context, style and structure of the invaluable sources which do exist, as well as the historical circumstances under which they were created. This book is an attempt to fill this historiographical gap on early modern Ottoman history writing.
