The Mediterranean in the early modern period witnessed a great struggle between the Ottoman and Spanish empires. While the Ottomans mostly made these naval efforts in the Tersâne-i Âmire in a centralized way, the Spanish distributed their naval construction to different shipyards: Barcelona in the Iberian Peninsula; Messina and Napoli in the central Mediterranean.
