More than a century on, the Young Turk Period of Ottoman history recently
has become a fascinating field of study due to the fact that it was in this period  that major political and social configurations were crystallized, leading to the
emergence of the Modern Middle East. The period is significant as it included
political reform and intellectual fermentation, and devastating wars that brought
the end of the Ottoman Empire. Moreover, it was the first time that the multiethnic Ottoman society experienced constitutionalism and in accordance with
this changed the nature of Ottoman statecraft and of the relationship between
the state and ethno-religious groups in the empire.
