“Tuvalete mi Geldim, Eyleme mi?”: Trans Bedenlerin Umumi Tuvaletlerde Denetimi ve Sıradanlık Hakkı

Öz

Bu makale, İstanbul ve Lahor’da transların umumi tuvalet deneyimlerinden hareketle, cinsiyete göre ayrılmış tuvaletlerin yalnızca gündelik ihtiyaç alanları değil, bedenin okunabilirliğinin, cinsiyetin doğrulanabilirliğinin ve kamusal alanda bulunma meşruiyetinin sınandığı mikro-politik eşikler olduğunu tartışır. Çalışma, 2022 yılında İstanbul ve Lahor’da 10’ar olmak üzere toplam 20 trans+ kişiyle gerçekleştirilen yarı yapılandırılmış derinlemesine görüşmelere dayanmaktadır. Katılımcı anlatıları, umumi tuvaletlerin translar açısından cinsiyet teftişi, bakış, güvenlik görevlisi müdahalesi, kimlik sorgulaması, bedensel özdenetim, hijyen ve altyapı sorunlarıyla iç içe geçtiğini göstermektedir. İstanbul anlatılarında görünüş, ses, kimlik ve güvenlik üzerinden işleyen cinsiyet teftişi öne çıkarken; Lahor anlatıları, üçüncü cinsiyet/X kimlik gibi yasal tanınma biçimlerinin gündelik mekânsal tanınmayı kendiliğinden üretmediğini, umumi tuvalet erişiminin hijyen, altyapı, görevli müdahalesi ve ticari alternatiflere yönelme zorunluluğuyla şekillendiğini göstermektedir. Makale, bu deneyimleri yalnızca hizmet erişimi ya da ayrımcılık meselesi olarak değil, sıradanlık hakkı ve duygulanımsal adalet bağlamında ele alır. Böylece mekânsal adaletin, transların kamusal mekâna yalnızca girebilmesini değil, bedensel ihtiyaçlarını yadırganmadan, açıklama yapmak zorunda kalmadan ve korku/ endişe üretmeyen koşullarda karşılayabilmesini de içermesi gerektiğini ileri sürer.

“Did I Come to the Toilet or to a Protest?”: The Regulation of Trans Bodies in Public Toilets and the Right to Ordinariness

This article examines trans people’s experiences of public toilets in Istanbul and Lahore, arguing that sex-segregated toilets are not merely spaces of everyday bodily need, but micro-political thresholds where bodily legibility, gender verification, and the legitimacy of being in public are continually tested. The article draws on semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted in 2022 with 20 trans+ people, ten in Istanbul and ten in Lahore. Participants’ narratives show that public toilets are shaped by gender policing, intrusive gazes, security interventions, identity questioning, bodily self-regulation, hygiene concerns, and infrastructural inequalities. While the Istanbul narratives foreground gender inspection through appearance, voice, identity documents, and security encounters, the Lahore narratives show that forms of legal recognition such as third gender/X identity do not automatically produce everyday spatial recognition, and that access to public toilets is shaped by hygiene, infrastructure, staff intervention, and the need to turn to commercial alternatives. Rather than treating these experiences solely as matters of service access or discrimination, the article discusses them through the right to ordinariness and affective justice. It argues that spatial justice should not only mean formal access to public space, but also the possibility for trans people to meet bodily needs without suspicion, explanation, fear, or forced self-regulation.
