Perception of Modernism in Turkish Painting in the 1930s
Abstract
Turkish painting enters a dynamic phase of development after the proclamation of the Republic. Artistic debates and critical approaches gain new dimensions in line with this development. The Republic of Turkey's efforts to create national art and the discussions on the activities that support the republican ideology explain the artistic perspective of the period. On the other hand, the new movements emerging in Europe in the early 20th century are also frequently discussed in these debates. The acceleration of intellectual debates on modern art in Turkey begins in the 1930s. In this period, two artist groups, the Union of Independent Painters and Sculptors (1928-1942) and Group D (1933-1951), which have assumed pioneering roles in the history of Turkish painting, carry out important activities in parallel with the principles and revolutions of the Republic. The understanding of experimenting with and disseminating Western forms is felt on the canvases of the artists as a natural consequence of this process. In their stylistically new and rich experiments, the artists explore the structural dimensions of modern art. The public perception of modern art is the main factor that directs this process. Therefore, evaluating the critical approaches to modernism in the 1930s is of great importance in terms of comprehending the developments related to Turkish painting. The treatment of the phenomenon of modernism in Turkish public opinion sheds light on the dominant debates in the art of painting that continue to this day. Within the scope of this evaluation, the intellectual dimension of the period and the criticisms directed against artistic activities are primary sources for us to read the process.
