Truth claims and worship: An analysis from the perspective of the philosophy of religion

Abstract

This study offers a philosophical analysis of the phenomenon of worship within the context of religions’ claims to truth and salvation. Its primary aim is to demonstrate that worship is not merely a ritual practice but a domain where the epistemic and soteriological dimensions of religious truth are manifested. Drawing on examples from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the research comparatively examines the essential, teleological, and formal dimensions of worship, analyzing how each relates to conceptions of God and paradigms of salvation. Using a qualitative document analysis method, the study explores how exclusivist, inclusivist, and pluralist theological approaches are reflected in ritual practices. The findings indicate that the worship conceptions of the three Abrahamic religions are predominantly exclusivist, while inclusivist interpretations appear only in limited and context-dependent forms. Consequently, worship is evaluated as a phenomenon that grounds truth claims, reinforces communal identity, and fosters moral transformation. From the perspective of the philosophy of religion, it functions as both an epistemic and normative medium for articulating and experiencing religious truth.
