Determination of the Competence of the Music Education Program Students' Out-of-Class Activities in the Process of Ear Training Education

Abstract

Ear Training is a basic course consisting of six semesters in Music Education Program. Within the scope of this course, the students are aimed to gain theoretical and practical knowledge and skills they will use in their professional lives. In the acquisition of these knowledge and skills, that students should participate the lessons with interest and enthusiasm and do their out-of-class activities systematically and as their teachers ask are important factors that contribute to their success levels. The aim of the research, therefore, is to determine the status of the students' out-of-class activities of Ear Training and to identify the existing shortcomings. On that sense, the present research is a descriptive study. The research was began with a literature review and then a semi-structured interview form consisting of 6 questions was conducted to faculty members instructing Ear Training courses and students class attendance rates, the numbers of the students failing for non-attendance, and their academic achievement scores were determined. In addition,1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students of Music Education Departments in Turkey were conducted a questionnaire and students' Ear Training out-ofclass working hours, and their methods were defined in detail. The findings were reviewed with frequency and percentage values using SPSS 22 program. As a result of the research, it has been found out that students out-of-class activities took 2 and 4 weeks, the rates of those who never did their daily practices were %51.5, %63 and %67.7 for 1st, 2ndand 3rd grades and the rates of those who practiced for 10-30 minutes were %41.6, %32.9 and %29.1 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. Within the scope of the research, the methods used by the students for their out-of-class Ear Training practices were also determined. According to the results, it has been found out that the rates of the students who largely or completely preferred individual working method were %33.3 and %31.1 at all grades, the rates of the students who preferred group work on a mid or large scale were %29.8 and %27.3, and the rates of the students who never or rarely preferred the interactive method were %62.7 and %23.4. That is to say, it is determined that students mostly preferred individual method, then group work and lastly the interactive method. In the research, the success levels of students in Ear Training were also analyzed. According to the findings, %21.1 of students in all grades in Ear Training courses failed for non-attendance, the rate of the students who had 55 points and more out of 100 points was %58.6, and the rate of the students who had 54 and less points was %41.4. Experts also stated that students had a moderate level of interest for the course. Based on the findings, it has been concluded that students' daily and weekly out-of-class Ear Training practices were inadequate, the self-study method was preferred most; however, group work was the most effective method for the out-of-class practices of tone, chord and melody dictation, and a considerable number of students failed and had to repeat
