THE REASONS FOR TRADITIONAL MARRIAGES IN TURKEY AND THE EFFECTS OF CUSTOM ON MARRIAGES

Abstract

This study deals with certain types of traditional marriages occur in various regions of Turkey. These marriage types are as follows: taygeldi, levirat, blood price and berder. While analysing these marriage types, the following points are planned to be revealed: the socio-cultural and economical reasons, decision makers for such marriage types, role changes resulting from these marriages, conflicts experienced as well as the effects of custom on these types of marriage. Firstly, background information will be provided in regard to patterns of these marriage types. Next, data gathered through the interviews with the individuals having experience on these marriage types. These interviewees live in the provinces where these certain types of marriage are common (Nev ehir-Taygeldi, Mardin-Levirat, Urfa-blood price and Urfa/Mardin-Berder). Therefore, the reasons for, the pattern and features of these marriage types will be discussed, leading to new information which will a significant contribution to the existing literature
