Investigation on the Effect of Role Ambıguity on Work Alienation and Their Differentiations According to Demographic Variables

Abstract

Nowadays, due to the changes and developments in organizational structures, job definitions have become more flexible, and it has begun to be expected to fulfill multiple roles from individuals. This leads to an increase in the uncertainty of the roles that employees perceive. As a result of the perception of role ambiguity, jobs become meaningless for the individual. Moving away from work and organization causes to alianation of work. In this study, it was investigated whether the perceived role ambiguity had an effect on work alienation. Also, whether the perceived role ambiguity and work alienation differentiate according to some demographic characteristics was examined. The study was carried out on 152 white-collar employees working in Istanbul. Pearson correlation analysis, regression analysis, independent sample t- test and one-way ANOVA were used in hypothesis testing. Results indicated that there was a significant and moderately positive correlation between perceived role ambiguity and work alienation. Besides, it was revealed that perceived role ambiguity had a significant and positive effect on work alienation. Also, it was found that the role ambiguity did not show any significant differences according to the demographic variables (gender, marital status, age, institutional seniority and income level), whereas work alienation showed significant difference only according to institutional seniority.
