During the design of a concrete mixture, it is required to generate an optimum value between quality and cost. In this study, quality of C40 concrete produced for Marmaray Project, which is one of the most important projects of Turkey, is statistically investigated by using the compressive strengths of 7 day and 28 day cylindrical specimens. Besides, the high strength concrete is compared with normal strength concrete; and the relevant codes and regulations used in Turkey are considered. Based on the evaluation of the 7 and 28 day concrete compressive strength test results of 1804 specimens, the mean value and the variability of C40 concrete which can be expressed as high strength concrete in the practice of Turkey, are found to be very high. The results of high mean value and variability are discussed in terms of production cost.
