In this paper, hydropower potential of Zab river basin has been investigated. Zab basin is a sub basin of Tigris catchment. More than 96% of the area is mountainous. The total drainage area of Zab basin is 6780 km2 and takes place in southeast of Anatolia. For the determination of Zab basin hydropower potential, initially, historical data of main flow of Zab river has been analyzed. Historical data have been used on a monthly basis for different years of gauging stations. It has been calculated that the electricity generation using this potential is 1321.10 gigawatt hour per year (GWh/year) with 176.50 megawatt (MW) installed capacity. It is required constructing seven new dams on the valley of Zab river except small hydropower potential for the evaluation of all the Zab river water potential. While realized these dams of the main river, the all of river potential will be tapped. Then Zab river potential will be turned as an integrated project in Zab basin. Additionally, it is assumed that total Small Hydropower Potential (SHP) of Zab basin is at least 25% of large hydropower potential. For reducing the cost of dams, they may be constructing by CFRDs types. The development of this potential will add an important monetary value to the Turkish economy.
