The Role of The Family in Shaping Political Attitudes: An Evaluation on Changing Dynamics

This study explores the central role of the family in shaping individuals' political attitudes. The family functions as a primary agent of socialization through which children acquire political values and identities from an early age. Parents’ political orientations, the values they transmit, and the family's authoritarian or democratic structure are key determinants in this process. In traditional family structures, parental influence tends to be more dominant, whereas contemporary changes -such as rising divorce rates, the weakening of the nuclear family, and the spread of alternative family forms- are transforming this influence. Individuals raised in democratic households tend to develop stronger critical thinking skills, while those from authoritarian families experience stronger political identity transmission. Field studies in Turkey show that while the influence of the family persists, individual factors such as age and gender alter its degree. Meanwhile, digitalization, media, and peer groups are reshaping the role of the family in the process of political socialization.
