Narrating Unbelonging: Islam as Cultural Dialogue in the Diasporic Worlds of Abdulrazak Gurnah’s By the Sea and Desertion

Öz

This study examines the representation of Islam as a cross-boundary, decentered, and nonfixed identity construct in Abdulrazak Gurnah’s By the Sea and Desertion. It draws on Homi K. Bhabha’s concepts of hybridity and unfixity, and Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of polyphony and heteroglossia. Through close reading, Islam emerges as a dynamic, diasporic cultural signifier rather than a static identity. The novels deconstruct essentialist binaries and present identity as fluid, shaped by migration, displacement, and intercultural dialogue.
