Öz

Dikiş makinesi 19. yy.da önemli bir teknolojik ürün olarak icat edilmekle birlikte Osmanlı toplumu tarafından da aynı yy.ın ikinci yarısından sonra kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Bir teknoloji ithalatçısı olan Osmanlı Devleti ulaşım teknolojisinde yaşanan yenilikleri takip edebildiği gibi aynı zamanda hane içi üretimde önemli bir etkisi olan dikiş makinesinin de 1860’lardan sonra önemli bir ithalatçısı olmuştur. Bu dönemde dikiş makinelerinin Fransa, Almanya, İngiltere ve Amerika gibi ülkelerden ithal edildiği anlaşılmaktadır. Araştırmamızda uzun süreli bir tüketim malı olan dikiş makinelerinin Osmanlı’ya ithalatı birtakım istatistiklerle açıklanmaya çalışılacak ve bu makinelerin özellikle 19.yy.ın son yıllarından II. Meşrutiyet ve sonrasında Anadolu’da nerelerde kullanım alanı bulduğu ve Amerikan Singer Manufacturing Company’nin geç Osmanlı toplumunda dikiş makinesi kullanımındaki etkisi ve önemi açıklanmaya çalışılacaktır.

Sewing Machine Usage in the Ottoman Empire and The Singer Manufacturing Company

Öz

Although the sewing machine was invented as an important technological product in the 19th century, the Ottoman society started to use it after the second half of the same century. As a technology importer, the Ottoman Empire was able to follow the innovations in transport technology, and at the same time became an important importer of the sewing machine, which had a significant impact on household production, after the 1860s. In this period, it is understood that sewing machines were imported from countries such as France, Germany, England and America. In our research, the import of sewing machines, a long – term consumer good, to the Ottoman Empire will be tried to be explained with some statistics and it will be tired to be explained where these machines were used in Anatolia, especially from the last years of the 19th century to the Second Constitutional Monarchy and afterwards, and the influence and importance of the American Singer Manufacturing Company in the use of sewing machines in the late Ottoman society.
