The effect of intermarriage on children's educational attainment

Öz

This study investigates the effect of intermarriage on the educational attainment of children using data from Germany. In this study intermarriage is defined as the marriage between any immigrant and a native. For the purpose of this study, the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) is used. The findings indicate that it is hard to generalize the effect of intermarriages on the educational attainment of children since the results are mixed. Since the results are different for each type of intermarriage, this indicates that the results are not stemming from the characteristics of intermarriage but the characteristics of the intermarried fathers and mothers. Another important finding is that school environment is a vital factor that affects the children’s educational attainment. After additionally controlling for whether children had experienced any disadvantages in school due to country of origin, a positive effect of having intermarried parents compared to having native-native parents is found. This implies that policy makers should attach high importance to make institutions more aware about the potential discrimination against children with a migrant background and to make sure that all children have equal opportunities in education.

Karma evliliğin çocuk eğitimi üzerine etkisi

Öz

Bu çalışmada, Almanya veri seti kullanılarak karma evliliklerin çocukların eğitime katılımı üzerine etkisi incelenmektedir. Karma evlilik, herhangi bir ırka bağlı göçmen kişi ile yerli birinin evliliği şeklinde tanımlanmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı doğrultusunda Alman Sosyo Ekonomik Panel (G-SOEP) veri seti kullanılmıştır. Her bir karma evlilik türü için farklı sonuçlar elde edilmiştir Analizde farklı sonuçlar elde edildiğinden karma evliliklerin çocukların eğitime katılımı üzerine etkisini genellemek zor olmaktadır. Farklı sonuçlar elde edilmesi gösteriyor ki elde edilen sonuçlar karma evliliğin yapısından değil karma evlilik yapan baba ve annelerin kendilerine has özelliklerinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Bir diğer bulgu çocukların eğitime katılımını etkileyen önemli faktörlerden birinin okul ortamı olmasıdır. Çocukların okulda etnik kökenleri yüzünden zarar görüp görmedikleri ile ilgili değişken analize dahil edildiğinde, hem anne hem babası yerli olan çocuklara kıyasla karma evlilik yapmış aileye sahip olan çocuklar için pozitif bir etki bulunmuştur. Bu sonuç göstermektedir ki poltika yapıcılar kurumların potansiyel ayrımcılığa karşı farkındalıklarının oluşmasına büyük önem vermeil ve bütün çocuklara eğitimde eşit fırsatlar sunmalıdır.
