Abd al Rahmān Shukrī's Understanding of Poetry

Abstract

This article examines the life and views on Arabic poetry of Abd al Rahmān Shukrī (1886–1955), one of the innovative poets of the twentieth century who lived in Egypt and was of Moroccan origin. This study aims to examine Abd al Rahmān Shukrī's approach to poetry. Within this framework, a literature review was conducted; works written about Shukrī, encyclopaedia entries, the introductions to Shukrī's poetry collections, and his views on poetry as expressed in his articles were examined. This study only addresses Shukrī's views on poetry; his criticism and short stories were not included in the research. The study reveals that the sources examined provide information that supports each other. Abd al Rahmān Shukrī, who spent his life as an educator, holds an important place in modern Arabic literature. After completing his university education, he studied in England thanks to his proficiency in English, which gave him the opportunity to experience Western literature firsthand. This experience broadened his literary culture and shaped his understanding of poetry. Shukrī's literary understanding is based on the roots of classical Arabic literature on the one hand, and on the other hand, it is shaped by the innovative views he learned from Western literature. He read many classic works of Arabic literature, and his English education also led him to take an interest in English literature. His adoption of the views of English Romantic poets at a time when French literature was more widespread placed him in a unique position. Abd al Rahmān Shukrī carried forward the literary innovation movement that began in Egypt with the French Revolution and pioneered the spread of Romanticism and its principles in Arabic literature. According to Shukrī, poets should distance themselves from the formalism of the classical school and they should not view poetry as merely a structure woven with formal rules. In his view, poetry is an art form in which the poet can express his feelings and thoughts sincerely. In this context, he sought to free poetry from rigid formalism and criticised the rules and patterns that hindered the development of poetry. He did not consider elements such as rhyme and metre to be indispensable conditions of poetry. The most important indication of his disregard for formalism can be seen in the two poems he wrote in a free style without meter or rhyme. According to him, poetry should express emotion; it should not be limited by artificial structures.
