The Spiritual Dimension of Inner Peace from the Perspective of the Holy Qur’an: Inner Peace in the Realm of Mind

Abstract

The modern world is characterized by its focus on speed and pleasure. Modern humans, forced to adapt to rapidly changing processes each day, ultimately find themselves overwhelmed by exhaustion. Seeking refuge in pleasure, they often fail to find the peace and happiness they desire, leading to loneliness, sadness, and chaos. Humans need time to pause, calm down, turn inward, understand themselves, and find inner peace by overcoming their loneliness. The Qur’an, being a universal book, serves as a source of guidance for all of humanity. It addresses the material and spiritual needs of humankind, created from body and soul, showing them the paths to salvation and happiness in eternal life, as well as offering a prescription for peace and happiness in this world. Inner peace is when a person feels happy, calm and balanced emotionally, spiritually and mentally, and when they are free of negative emotions such as stress, chaos, fear and anxiety, and have a sense of serenity. Being at peace with themselves, having a positive life experience and having the ability to control stress are important elements that lead to inner peace. Human beings are the most perfect beings among all created beings. This being, consisting of soul and body, has feelings and thoughts that are in contact not only with the external world but also with the inner world. The Qur’an describes this event as the divine insufflation of the soul after humanity is created in the best of forms, showing that human beings has not only a physical but also a metaphysical/spiritual characteristic. When examining the verses in the Quran where the concept of inner peace is used, it becomes clear that the elements that bring inner peace to a person consist of two factors: material and spiritual. It is stated that sakinah is sent down as a help and gift from Allah only to people who believe (al-Baqara 2/248; al-Fath 48/4, 18, 26; al-Tawbah 9/26, 40), and the fact that believers attain itminan shows the spiritual dimension of inner peace. Marriage (al-A‘râf 7/189 and al-Rum 30/21) provides the human dimension of inner peace, home (al-Nahl 16/80) the spatial dimension, and night (al-An’am 6/96; Yunus 10/67; al-Naml 27/86; al-Qasas 28/73; al-Mu’min 40/61) the temporal dimension of inner peace, independent of belief, are examples of the material aspect of inner peace. Faith (al-Nahl 16/106), knowledge (al-Baqara 2/260 and al-Maidah 5/113) and dhikr (al-Ra’d 13/28) are also among the spiritual elements that lead a person to inner peace. Human beings are in search of meaning in their lives. Faith offers the meaning they seek. Through faith, a person's world gains meaning, and their life is freed from confusion and unrest. Through faith, a person attains inner peace and enlightenment.
