A content analysis of sight-reading books in flute literature

The purpose of this study is to examine the sight-reading methods used in flute education in terms of their contextual, pedagogical, and formal characteristics. When the flute education literature is reviewed, a lack of mother tongue-based original resources for national identity-oriented sight-reading studies draws attention. Logistic constraints and high cost factors encountered in accessing international materials, which are predominantly used in current teaching processes, can create various difficulties in procuring educational materials. This situation constitutes an important gap that needs to be addressed in the literature, especially for professional music education students and flute performers. However, before achieving a quantitative and qualitative increase toward developing original national methods, analyzing the pedagogical and content structures of existing globally accepted books is of strategic importance. Therefore, this study aims to offer a scientific dataset and a theoretical framework for the high-quality and mother tongue-based flute literature to be constructed in the future by analyzing the current global accumulation.
The research was conducted using the document analysis model, one of the qualitative research designs, and the content analysis technique, which provides a systematic analysis and categorizing process, was utilized to analyze the obtained data. The study was limited to 10 deciphering books selected through purposeful sampling, and the sample was determined. In this regard, the criteria stating that the materials must ‘directly focus on the sight-reading skill in flute training,’ ‘be accessible on international platforms and have pedagogical acceptance,’ ‘belong to different authors,’ and ‘present a technical diversity from beginner to advanced levels’ were taken as the primary selection criteria.
As a result of the research, it was determined that the examined sight-reading methods present their musical contents in a progressive order. It was identified that the methods construct technical difficulties in a gradual structure from simple to complex; however, strategic guidance and self-assessment tools to support the cognitive dimension of the sight-reading skill remain limited. In terms of formal characteristics, it was concluded that the vast majority of the materials support pedagogical efficiency in terms of readability and ease-of-use criteria. In light of the findings, it is evaluated that the current international literature prioritizes technical development but leaves the stages of mental preparation and strategy development during the sight-reading process in the background. The study is anticipated to provide a fundamental theoretical framework for the development of mother tongue-based original pedagogical literature that addresses these deficiencies.

This study was conducted with full adherence to the principles of scientific research and publication ethics. Since the sources used in the research are already published and publicly available "secondary data" (books), an ethics committee decision is not legally required. However, to formalize that all presented data, analyses, and documents were obtained within the framework of academic integrity and ethical rules, an application was made to the Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Social and Human Sciences Research Ethics Committee. Flüt literatüründe yer alan deşifre kitaplarının içerik analizi
Öz
Bu çalışmanın amacı, flüt eğitiminde kullanılan deşifre metotlarını içeriksel, eğitsel ve biçimsel özellikleri bakımından incelemektir. Flüt eğitimi literatürü incelendiğinde, ulusal kimlikli deşifre çalışmalarına yönelik anadil temelli özgün kaynakların eksikliği dikkat çekmektedir. Mevcut öğretim süreçlerinde ağırlıklı olarak kullanılan uluslararası materyallere erişimde karşılaşılan lojistik kısıtlılıklar ve yüksek maliyet unsurları, eğitim materyali temininde çeşitli güçlükler ortaya çıkarabilmektedir. Bu durum, özellikle mesleki müzik eğitimi alan öğrenciler ve flüt icracıları için literatürde giderilmesi gereken önemli bir boşluk teşkil etmektedir. Ancak, özgün ulusal metotların geliştirilmesine yönelik nicel ve nitel bir artış sağlanmadan önce, evrensel ölçekte kabul görmüş mevcut kitapların pedagojik ve içerik yapılarını çözümlemek stratejik bir öneme sahiptir. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma, mevcut evrensel birikimi analiz ederek gelecekte kurgulanacak nitelikli ve anadil temelli flüt literatürü için bilimsel bir veri seti ve kuramsal bir dayanak sunmayı hedeflemektedir
Araştırma, nitel araştırma desenlerinden doküman incelemesi modeliyle yürütülmüş; elde edilen verilerin çözümlenmesinde ise sistematik bir çözümleme ve temalandırma süreci sunan içerik analizi tekniği kullanılmıştır. Araştırma amaçlı örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilen 10 adet deşifre kitabı ile sınırlandırılmıştır ve örneklem belirlenmiştir. Bu doğrultuda; materyallerin doğrudan flüt eğitiminde “deşifre becerisine odaklanması”, “uluslararası platformlarda erişilebilirliğe ve pedagojik kabule sahip olması”, “farklı yazarlara ait olması” ve “başlangıçtan ileri seviyeye kadar teknik bir çeşitlilik sunması” temel seçim ölçütleri olarak esas alınmıştır.
Araştırma sonucunda; incelenen deşifre metotlarının müzikal içeriklerini aşamalı bir sıralama ile sunduğu saptanmıştır. Metotların teknik zorlukları basitten karmaşığa doğru aşamalı bir yapıda kurguladığı, ancak deşifre becerisinin bilişsel boyutunu destekleyecek stratejik yönlendirmelerin ve öz değerlendirme araçlarının sınırlı düzeyde kaldığı belirlenmiştir. Biçimsel açıdan materyallerin büyük çoğunluğunun, okunaklılık ve kullanım kolaylığı kriterleri bakımından pedagojik verimliliği destekler nitelikte olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Bulgular ışığında, mevcut uluslararası literatürün teknik gelişimi öncelediği ancak deşifre sürecindeki zihinsel hazırlık ve strateji geliştirme aşamalarını ikincil planda bıraktığı değerlendirilmektedir. Çalışmanın, bu eksiklikleri gideren anadil temelli özgün pedagojik literatürün geliştirilmesi sürecinde temel bir kuramsal çerçeve sunması öngörülmektedir.
