ROMAN PERIOD OIL LAMPS FROM ELAIUSSA SEBASTE: TYPOLOGY, LOCAL PRODUCTION AND TRADE WITH REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLES

Excavations conducted at the ancient city of Elaiussa Sebaste have demonstrated that the site was occupied from the Hellenistic period onward. Nevertheless, architectural arrangements and associated finds indicate that the city experienced significant transformation and growth during the Roman Imperial period. This development is further supported by the large number of oil lamps recovered in excavations and dated to the Roman Imperial and Late Roman periods. Detailed analysis of these mold-made objects has revealed that the assemblage comprises six distinct oil lamp types. Some of these correspond to well-known forms popular in the early centuries of the Roman Imperial period, while others belong to types widely attested in the region of Cilicia. Among the assemblage are lamp types frequently used at Tarsus. Although previous studies have noted the presence of locally produced lamps, the present study addresses the issue in greater detail through the examination of molds, an oil lamp kiln, and fabric morphology. In addition, this study identifies, for the first time, the presence of Cypriot-produced oil lamps at Elaiussa Sebaste, as evidenced by workshop names inscribed on lamp bases. The identification of these workshop names contributes to our understanding of commercial activities at Elaiussa Sebaste, particularly trade relations with Cyprus during the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. The scenes depicted on the oil lamp discus are decorative themes widely used in the Roman Imperial period and include erotic imagery, gods, heroes, animal representations, and motifs such as rosettes employed as standardized templates. At the same time, several discus scenes recovered at Elaiussa Sebaste appear to be unique and are not attested elsewhere.

Elaiussa Sebaste’den Roma Dönemi Kandilleri: Seçilmiş Örneklerle Tipoloji, Yerel Üretim ve Ticaret

Elauissa Sebaste Antik Kenti’nde yapılan kazılar kentin Hellenistik Dönem’den itibaren yerleşim gördüğünü kanıtlamıştır. Bununla birlikte özellikle mimari düzenlemeler ve buluntular sayesinde Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’nde kentte değişim ve büyüme yaşandığı anlaşılmıştır. Bu değişim kazı çalışmalarında bulunan Roma İmparatorluk ve Geç Roma Dönemi’ne tarihlenen bir çok kandil ile de desteklenmektedir. Kalıp yapımı bu eserler üzerine yapılan ayrıntılı inceleme sonucunda kandillerin 6 farklı tipte olduğu ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Bu kandillerden bazıları Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’nin ilk yüzyıllarında meşhur olan örneklerden olup, diğer tipleri ise Kilikya bölgesinde yoğun olarak ele geçen kandiller oluşturmaktadır. Kandiller arasında özellikle Tarsus’ta sıklıkla kullanılan kandil örnekleri de bulunmaktadır. Bununla beraber daha önce yapılan yayınlarda yerel üretim kandillerin varlığından bahsedilse de bu çalışmada konu üzerinde daha ayrıntılı durulmuş, kalıplar, kandil fırını ve hamur morfolojisi incelenmiştir. Ayrıca yine bu çalışmada ilk kez Kıbrıs üretimi kandillerin kentteki mevcudiyeti kandil tabanlarında yer alan atölye isimlerinden anlaşılmıştır. Atölye isimlerinin saptanması ile özellikle MS 3-4 yüzyıllarda Elaiussa Sebaste kentinde yaşanan ticari faliyetlere, özellikle Kıbrıs ile kurulan ticari ilişkiler hakkındaki bilgilerimize katkı sağlanmıştır. Kandillerin diskuslarında yer alan anlatımlar imparatorluk döneminde oldukça yaygın olan dekoratif öğelerdir. Söz konusu sahnelerde erotik anlatımlar, tanrılar, kahramanlar, hayvan betimlemeleri ya da rozet gibi farklı konular şablon olarak kullanılmıştır. Diğer yandan başka bir yerde karşımıza çıkma-yan kandil diskus örneklerinin Elauissa Sebaste’de bulunduğu görülmüştür.
