The subject matter of this work consists a group of Attic black glazed pottery,
which was discovered in Daskyleion between 1988-2004. The main objective of
this work is to form a catalogue of this pottery, to evaluate them, and to draw out
conclusions on the social, economic, cultural and political position of Daskyleion
in the 5th century.
The observations prove that almost all of the black glazed pottery shapes that
were produced in Attica were used in Daskyleion in the 5th century.
As a result of examining the material which consists of the subject matter of
this work, it was proved that Daskyleion increased to import this pottery in the 5th
century. It was also comprehended that there was a great increase in trade between
Athens and Daskyleion in that period due to the strong and balanced situation of
Daskyleion. Attic pottery, which was the most qualified, expensive, luxurious
product in ancient time was imported to Daskyleion in the 5th century. This is the
proof that Daskyleion lived its golden age in that period. As a matter of fact, the
increasing import of Attic pottery should be the proof of the architectural activities
that were attempted during the satrapal seat of Artabazos I.
Finally, it is posible to say that Kyzikos had a role in the trade between
Daskyleion and Athen.
