Benyvirus cinsi içerisinde yer alan Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), düzgün çubuk şeklinde partikül yapısında olup, toprak kökenli obligat parazit fungus Polymyxa betae Keskin tarafından taşınmaktadır. Bu virüs 1950’li yıllarda ilk kez İtalya’da belirlenmesini takiben dünyada şeker pancarı yetiştirilen alanlara kısa sürede yayılmıştır. Virüsün fungusun kalın duvarlı kışlama sporlarında 15 yıldan uzun bir süre canlı kalması, dayanıklı çeşitlerin kullanımı dışındaki mücadele yöntemlerini etkisiz kılmaktadır. Hastalık, şeker pancarında verimin büyük ölçüde düşmesine ve bu bitkinin tarımının ekonomik olmaktan çıkarak terkedilmesine neden olmaktadır.
