On Dokuzuncu Yüzyıl İngiliz İlahiyatında Oxford Hareketi Namıdiğer Risaleciler: Deskriptif Bir Giriş

Öz

Bu makalede, on dokuzuncu yüzyıl İngiliz ilahiyatında ve özellikle Anglikan Kilisesi’nin yeniden yapılanmasında önemli yere sahip olan Oxford Hareketi’ni ele alıyorum. Amacım, hareketin teopolitik görüşlerinden yola çıkarak İngiliz ilahiyatı içindeki yerini ortaya koymak ve Türkiye’de ilahiyat akademisinde alana dair daha kapsamlı Dinler Tarihi araştırmaları için alan açmaktır. Bu bakımdan soruşturmamı; hareketin temel görüşleri, liderleri ile hareket hakkında ortaya atılan yaygın eleştirilerle sınırlandırıyorum. Yöntem açısından Oxford Hareketi’nin özelliklerini açıklamayı hedefleyen deskriptif (betimleyici) araştırma biçimini öne çıkarıyorum. Döneme ait ana kaynaklar ile hareketin yapısını doğrudan konu edinen ve sorgulayan çağdaş kaynakları belli konular (Kilise, Doktrin, Ritüel) çerçevesinde sınıflandırarak hareketin genel çerçevesini çıkarıyorum. Ana kaynaklarda, özellikle Oxford Hareketi’nin görüşlerinin kamuoyunda paylaşılmasında başat rol oynayan Çağın Risaleleri (Tracts for Times) isimli yayın serisini (90 sayı) merkeze alarak analiz ediyorum. Temel varsayımım; Oxford Hareketi’nin İngiliz ilahiyatı içinde yalnızca teolojik bir topluluk değil, dönemin sosyal ve siyasi atmosferiyle şekillenmiş teopolitik bir oluşum olduğudur. Bu nedenle, hareketin teolojik görüşlerinin, devrin sosyopolitik atmosferiyle doğrudan bağları bulunmaktadır. Araştırmamın önemi, on dokuzuncu yüzyıl İngiliz ilahiyatının konumunu ve dönemin politikalarıyla ilişkisini ortaya koymasından ileri gelmektedir. Ayrıca, Türkiye’de konuya dair doğrudan bir çalışma olmaması nedeniyle de önem arz etmektedir. Bu nedenle araştırmam, Türkiye’de konu hakkında daha geniş çalışmalar için betimleyici bir çerçeve sunar.

The Oxford Movement, or Tractarianism, in Nineteenth-Century British Theology: A Descriptive Overview

Öz

In this paper, I examine the Oxford Movement, which significantly influenced nineteenth-century English theology and contributed to changes within the Anglican Church. My objective is to clarify the Movement’s position within English theology by analyzing its theopolitical perspectives. I also aim to encourage further research on the History of Religions within theological studies in Türkiye. Accordingly, I concentrate on the Movement’s principal ideas, its leading figures, and the criticisms it encountered. I employ a descriptive methodology to emphasize the defining characteristics of the Oxford Movement. I organize both primary sources from the period and contemporary analyses into thematic categories such as Church, Doctrine, and Ritual. Among the primary sources, I pay particular attention to the publication series Tracts for the Times (90 issues), which played a central role in disseminating the Oxford Movement’s views, and I analyze these as key texts. My central assumption is that the Oxford Movement functioned not only as a theological community within English theology but also as a theopolitical movement shaped by the sociopolitical context of its era. Consequently, its theological positions are closely linked to the political environment of the period. The significance of this research lies in its attempt to elucidate the relationship between nineteenth-century English theology and contemporary politics. Additionally, this study is important due to the scarcity of direct research on this topic in Türkiye. In this respect, my research offers a descriptive framework to support broader future studies on the subject in Türkiye.
