The most prominent reason for the success of the Crusaders
in the near east was undoubtedly the disunity among the Muslims. Imaduddin
Zengi took his first serious step to ensure Islamic unity. He has been crowned
with success when retaking Urfa from the Crusaders. During these attempts, he
tried to annex Damascus and married up with the mother of the city governor. However,
he could not take the mentioned city due to unexpected developments. His son
Noureddin who took over when Imaduddin Zengi died also endeavored to ensure
Islamic Unity; therefore, he got married to the city governor Uner’s daughter,
namely, in order to rule over Damascus. He reaped the benefits of this marriage
in the effective struggle against the Crusaders. Thereafter Salahaddin married
Noureddin’s widow in order that he got closer to wealthy persons of Aleppo and
Mosul who posed an obstacle against this unity, and reaped the benefits of this
marriage in the third crusade. The king of Jerusalem was trying to maintain his
existence in these lands and perpetuate his hold on the kingdom by by marrying
off to a nobleman invited from Europe since he had no son during this time in
the Islamic world. Marriages played a key role in the rapprochement between societies
and dynasties in the pre-, during and post second crusade.
