Metrology and Aviation Safety: Case Studies

Öz

Metrology is a fundamental discipline for ensuring accuracy, traceability, and reliability in aviation systems, directly influencing flight safety and operational integrity. Despite its critical role, the impact of metrological errors on aviation accidents has not been sufficiently addressed from a systematic engineering perspective in the literature. This study aims to analyze the relationship between metrology and flight safety by examining selected aviation accidents through a structured engineering approach. The scope of the study includes four representative cases: Air Canada Flight 143 (unit conversion error), Air France Flight 447 (pitot sensor failure), Boeing 737 MAX accidents (sensor-dependent software failure), and Tuninter Flight 1153 (incorrect measurement instrument). A qualitative multiple case study methodology is employed, focusing on error propagation mechanisms, system responses, and safety outcomes. The findings reveal that metrological errors propagate through complex systems and lead to catastrophic failures when measurement validation, sensor redundancy, and system integration mechanisms are insufficient. The results clearly demonstrate that metrology is not merely a technical support function but a core component of system safety and reliability. It is concluded that without accurate, validated, and traceable measurement systems, safe and sustainable flight operations cannot be achieved.
