Investigating the Successful Urban Park Planning and Management Approach on the Sample of Teardrop Park- New York

Abstract

Parks which provide opportunities to feel the nature and recreation for centuries, have gained increasing importance and value with the opportunities they offer, especially in urban areas. Urban parks that are formed by cultural values, political and socio-economical structures of the societies are formed with social changes and with these qualities, they also became the reflectors of them. Some criteria have been determined for urban parks to be more useful for individuals and societies and some studies have been carried out. In this study, Harnik’s (2003) seven criteria which have been determined for the parks considered as successful were investigated. After that, Teardrop Park which is designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh and his team has been investigated in terms of these seven criteria. Through these evaluations it can be said that Teardrop Park is a successful urban park. The park which has designed and is being managed with the ecological approach is an active park which is addressed to all age groups. However, park is completely accessible for disabled people.
