Resistance in Group Counseling: Prevention and Intervention Methods
Abstract
Group counseling is a process of interaction which aims to create changes in members’ emotions, ways of thinking and behavior through group experience. In this process, members learn more effective strategies that will help them cope with their problems, gain effective life skills in preventing and eliminating acute and chronic stressors resulting from daily life. In group counseling, while there are factors preventing the members from reaching their behavioral goals and resulting from the structure, rules and applied theoretical approach of the group and the style of the leader, there are also factors originating from the members themselves. Probably, the most important one of these factors is the fact that members do not disclose them selves honestly. Resistance is a factor that prevents self-disclosure, reaching behavioral goals and contributing to the group. In this study, the concept of resistance and the reasons for resistance in group counseling have been discussed, and in the light of the relevant literature, the resistance prevention and intervention methods have been emphasized.
