From the Ahi Tradition to the National Economy Paradigm: Craft, Continuity, and Transformation in the Ottoman Empire
Öz
This study problematizes why the distinct separation of art and craft, characteristic of Western modernization, did not manifest as a similar rupture in the Ottoman Empire. It analyzes this divergence through the lens of the guild system’s “transformation and adaptation” rather than its “collapse”. The study argues that the guild structure, rooted in the Ahi tradition, was not merely an economic institution in the face of capitalist integration; despite internal decay throughout history, it functioned as a political locus of resistance striving to maintain moral order. In this context, the article proposes to extend Suraiya Faroqhi’s four-stage classification of guild history by incorporating “The Construction of the National Economy” as a fifth historical phase. This new phase reveals how guilds were instrumentalized in line with the state’s survival strategies and became a vehicle for reproducing social solidarity during the nation-state building process. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this study redefines the art-craft unity in the Ottoman Empire not as “backwardness” but as a unique strategy of “continuity and adaptation” shaped by local dynamics as the empire incorporated into the global capitalist system.
