Assessment of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Awareness Levels Regarding Skin Health, Sun Protection Habits, and Cosmetic Procedures Among Pregnant Women

Öz

Pregnancy is associated with immunological, hormonal, and vascular changes that may lead to various skin alterations, increasing the demand for skincare and cosmetic products. This study aimed to assess pregnant women’s skincare and cosmetic use habits, sun protection awareness, and attitudes toward aesthetic procedures. This cross-sectional study included 236 pregnant women aged ≥18 years and with a gestational age of ≥10 weeks or more. Demographic and obstetric data were recorded. All participants completed a 27-item questionnaire prepared by the researchers, along with the Green Cosmetic Consumption Scale (GCCS) and the Sun Protection Behavior Scale (SPBS). The mean age of pregnant women was 29.84 ±5.17 years, and the mean gestational age was 31.67 ±7.48 weeks. The top three most frequently purchased cosmetic products were personal hygiene products (71.2%), perfume (50.7%), and skincare products (36.7%). The most frequently preferred skincare products were moisturizer (63.6%), night cream (55.8%), and sunscreen (44.6%). Overall, 41.1% of the participants reported a habit of sunbathing, whereas 48.3% reported regular use of sunscreen. A positive, weak, and significant correlation was found between education levels and both the SPBS (r=0.218, p<0.01) and the GCCS (r=0.253, p<0.01). This study suggests that although pregnant women continue to use skincare and cosmetic products during pregnancy, their sun protection awareness and practices remain insufficient. Educational programs that can be provided before and during pregnancy can help pregnant women acquire accurate information and approaches regarding sun protection, awareness of safe ingredients, and the selection of cosmetic products and procedures.
