Cyclical and Intermittent Enteral Nutrition in Adult Internal Medicine Intensive Care Patients
Öz
This study compared cyclic and intermittent enteral feeding in adult internal medicine intensive care patients with respect to blood glucose regulation, gastric residual volume and feeding related complications. This single center, prospective, randomized and open label comparative study was conducted in the Internal Medicine Intensive Care Unit of Kütahya Evliya Çelebi Training and Research Research Hospital from 15 November 2022 to 15 June 2023. Adult patients receiving enteral nutrition were allocated by simple randomization to cyclic or intermittent feeding. Blood glucose was measured six times daily for three days. Fifty eight patients were enrolled, and 50 patients were included in the main comparative blood glucose analysis, with 25 patients in each group. No statistically significant difference was found between groups for three day mean blood glucose, time specific blood glucose measurements, gastric residual volume or recorded complication frequency. Cyclic and intermittent enteral feeding did not differ in blood glucose regulation, gastric residual volume or observed complication frequency in this single center study. The findings should be interpreted as exploratory because of the small sample size, short follow up, open label design and unequal gastric residual volume measurement frequency.
