Phubbing, Screen Time, and Theory of Mind in Medical Students: A Cross-Sectional Study
Öz
This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between screen use habits, phubbing behavior, and theory of mind performance—one of the social cognitive functions—in medical students. Of the students invited to the study online, 110 who agreed to participate completed a questionnaire including items on sociodemographic characteristics and smartphone use habits, the Generic Scale of Phubbing, and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). Descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analyses were used in the analysis of the data. Significant positive correlations were found between weekly screen time and the phubbing total score (p=0.007), nomophobia (p=0.002), and interpersonal conflict (p=0.006). In the hierarchical regression analysis, screen time contributed significantly to the model and was independently associated with phubbing scores (ΔR²=0.079; p=0.004). No statistically significant association was found between phubbing and the RMET. While phubbing behavior was associated with digital use habits such as screen time in medical students, no statistically significant association with theory of mind performance was detected in the present sample. To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate phubbing behavior and theory of mind performance together.
