A NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL COMPARISON OF PATIENTS DIAGNOSED AS BIPOLAR DISORDER IN DEPRESSION, SUBTHESHOLD DEPRESSION AND EUTHYMIC PERIODS

In this study, we aimed to compare of cognitive functions of patients diagnosed as Bipolar Di-sorder (BD) in depression, subthreshold depression and euthymic periods. Eighty one patients with a diagnosis of BD according to DSM IV-TR criteria, not in a manic episode and 50 control subjects were included in the study. Sociodemographic data form, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Stroop Test, Verbal and Nonverbal Cancel-lation Test, Rey Auditory Verbal learning test, Serial Digit learning Test, Rey Complex Figure Test were applied to both study groups. Patients were also assesed with Hamilton Depression Scale and Young Mania Rating Scale. Significant differences in the neuropsychological tests scores of BD and control groups were determi-ned. However, no significant difference was found in the neuropsychological tests scores of BD groups. The results of the study revealed that while there were no differences in the neurocognitive perfromance of patients in depression, threshold depression, euthymic period, there were significant differences between the patient and control groups. Cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder patients appears to be independent of the signs of depression.
