Several personality characteristics have been linked to a broad range of cancer-related outcomes. Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is one of the most frequently experienced and distressing issues among cancer survivors. This systematic review aimed to examine the existing literature to provide an overview of the association between personality traits and FCR. PubMed, EBSCOhost, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched using predefined keywords. As a result, 9 studies met the inclusion criteria. The Big Five, type D personality, threat sensitivity, and perfectionism were used to examine personality in the included studies. Findings indicated that FCR was significantly associated with these personality constructs. Higher levels of neuroticism, type D personality, threat sensitivity and perfectionism were linked to increased FCR, whereas higher levels of conscientiousness were associated with decreased FCR. Some studies also provided evidence for the mediating roles of various psychosocial factors, including adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies, intolerance of uncertainty, and metacognitive beliefs on the association between personality and FCR. Overall, the findings of the included studies demonstrated that personality seems to be related to FCR.
