Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between the level of empathic tendency, patient-centered care in diabetes nurses, and the glycemic level of diabetes patients during the COVID-19 process.
Methods: This study was conducted in a cross-sectional and descriptive type. The research was conducted on the social media platform (WhatsApp) by creating an online survey (google.docs application) due to the COVID-19 pandemic process between 01.06.2021 and 30.12.2021. The sample of the study consisted of 92 diabetes nurses and 920 diabetic patients. Data were collected using the Personal Identification Form for nurses and patients, the Jefferson Empathy Scale for Nurses, and the Patient-Centered Care Efficacy Scale. The data were evaluated using the SPSS 20.0 program on the computer. In the studyMann-Whitney U test, Student’s t test and Pearson Correlation analysis were applied in independent groups according to data characteristics.
Results: It was determined that diabetes nurses had high empathy levels and patient-centered care competence scores. There was no significant relationship between the empathic tendency level of diabetes nurses and the A1c level of diabetes patients (p>.05). Diabetes nurses with a postgraduate education level were found to have a statistically higher level of empathy tendency than nurses with a bachelor's degree (p<.05). It was determined that the patient-centered care competence score of the diabetes nurses without chronic disease was statistically higher than the nurses with the chronic disease (p<.05).
Conclusion: During the COVID-19 process, it was determined that the diabetes nurses' empathy levels and patient-centered care competence scores were high. However, there was no significant relationship between diabetes nurses' levels of empathy and patient-centered care competence scores and patients' A1c levels.
