Objective: This study aimed to examine subjective sleep quality and physical activity in elderly individuals with chronic diseases.
Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in a province located in the Central Anatolian region of Turkey between September 2023 and January 2024. The study population consisted of individuals aged 65 and over who were diagnosed with chronic diseases and who attended the internal medicine clinics of a university hospital. Ethics committee approval and institutional permission were obtained for the study. The sample size was determined by G-Power analysis, and 258 elderly individuals were included using the convenience sampling method. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data.
Results: It was found that the majority of elderly individuals (89.9%) had poor sleep quality and physical activity levels (65.1%) were inactive. Musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and neurological diseases were identified as the main conditions affecting individuals’ sleep quality and physical activity levels, respectively. A negative (r=-0.389) and significant (p<0.05) relationship was determined between sleep quality and physical activity.
Conclusion: Elderly individuals with chronic diseases have poor sleep quality and inactive physical activity levels. In addition, elderly individuals with musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and neurological system diseases have poorer sleep quality and physical activity levels. Therefore, sleep quality and physical activity levels should be evaluated with greater attention in all elderly individuals with chronic diseases, especially in elderly individuals with musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and neurological system diseases.
