A Qualitative Study on the Experiences of Healthcare Workers Temporarily Deployed to Earthquake Zones: "It was like doomsday, a battle for life..."

Öz

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the perceptions and experiences of healthcare workers temporarily deployed in regions affected by the February 6, 2023 earthquake.
Methods: The study was conducted between August and October 2023 with healthcare workers working at a research hospital in western Turkey who were deployed to regions affected by the February 6, 2023 earthquake Content analysis based on a qualitative approach was used for the study. The face-to-face interviews were conducted with 59 health care workers using a semi-structured questionnaire who were selected based on criteria. The data were analyzed using the NVIVO 12 Pro program.
Results: The results of the study revealed four themes, listed in descending order from most to least mentions, along with the number of times they were mentioned: The feeling of being there: good, but not enough (f:336), it was like the apocalypse (f:231), a battle for life (f:140), and lessons learned: coordination, planning and preparation (f:79).
Conclusion: The study concluded that the health workers who were temporarily deployed to the earthquake areas reported that they continued to recall the cries for help and feelings of helplessness they experienced during their time in the earthquake zone. They experienced difficulties related to physical conditions (cold weather, hygiene, shelter) and work-related problems (lack of supplies and coordination). While healthcare workers experienced feelings of sadness, a sense of inadequacy, stress and fear when providing care in the earthquake zone, they also expressed satisfaction at being able to help. In line with the results of the study, it is recommended that healthcare workers in disaster areas be supported not only in terms of their physical needs, but also psychologically and socially.

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışma 06 Şubat 2023 depreminden etkilenen bölgelere geçici görevle giden sağlık çalışanlarının algı ve deneyimlerini betimlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır.
Yöntem: Çalışma, Türkiye'nin batısındaki bir eğitim araştırma hastanesinde görevli olup, 06 Şubat 2023 depreminden etkilenen bölgelere geçici görevle giden sağlık çalışanları ile Ağustos-Ekim 2023 tarihleri arasında yapılmıştır. Çalışmada nitel yaklaşıma dayalı içerik analizi kullanılmıştır. Ölçüt örnekleme yöntemine göre belirlenen 59 sağlık çalışanı yarı yapılandırılmış soru formu ile yüz yüze görüşme yapılmıştır. Veriler NVIVO 12 Pro programında analiz edilmiştir.
Bulgular: Çalışma sonucunda dört tema elde edilmiştir. En çok atıf alandan en aza doğru ulaşılan tema etiketleri ve frekans sayıları şöyledir: orada olma hissi: iyi ama yeterli değil (f:336), mahşer yeri gibiydi (f:231), can pazarı (f:140), deneyimden çıkarılan ders: koordinasyon, plan ve hazırlıklı olmak (f:79)’tır.
Sonuç: Araştırma sonucunda deprem bölgesine geçici görevle giden sağlık çalışanları deprem bölgesinde bulundukları sürede insanların yardım çığlıklarını ve çaresizliklerini unutamadıklarını belirtmişlerdir. Bu sürede fiziksel (soğuk hava, hijyen, barınma) ve işle ilgili (malzeme ve koordinasyon eksikliği) koşullarla ilgili zorluklar yaşadıklarını ifade etmişlerdir. Sağlık çalışanları deprem bölgesinde bakım sağlarken, üzüntü, yetersizlik hissi, stres ve korku gibi duygular yaşarken, aynı zamanda yardım edebilmenin getirdiği memnuniyeti de dile getirmişlerdir. Çalışmadan elde edilen bulgular doğrultusunda afet bölgesinde sağlık çalışanlarının fiziksel ihtiyaçlarının yanı sıra psikolojik ve sosyal açılardan da desteklenmesi önerilmektedir.
