Objective: Sepsis is one of the most common complications in intensive care units (ICUs). It is important that nurses have sufficient knowledge to recognize sepsis early and manage it appropriately in the ICU. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sepsis knowledge and awareness of ICU nurses in the context of current sepsis care bundle recommendations.
Methods: This multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted between June 2023 and December 2023 with 275 nurses with at least one year of experience working in adult ICUs of three public hospitals in Türkiye. Data were collected with the Nurse Introduction Form and Sepsis Knowledge and Awareness Questionnaire.
Results: The self-confidence of ICU nurses in recognizing and managing sepsis patients was 16.19±5.25 points. According to the sepsis knowledge test, the mean score of correct answers was 9.40±1.97. The questions with the lowest correct answers were early signs of sepsis (8.3%), sepsis biomarkers (9.8%) and evaluation of septic shock treatment (47.3%). Sepsis knowledge was significantly higher among nurses with more experience (p=0.044).
Conclusion: This study highlighted the deficiencies in ICU nurses' knowledge regarding sepsis recognition and management. There is a need for health institutions and associations related to ICU nursing to provide repeated trainings on sepsis and include up-to-date evidence-based information and practices in their content.
