Nursing Students’ Desire for Care in Pandemic: A Qualitative Research

Öz

Objective: The present research aims to determine the views of fourth-year nursing students receiving distance education regarding their willingness to provide care realistically and holistically. Methods: This research was conducted in a province in eastern Turkey between September and December 2021. The research universe consisted of 4th-grade students at the university’s Faculty of Nursing. This is qualitative research using a phenomenological design. The sample consisted of eight students chosen using the criterion sampling method. Research data were collected using the “Descriptive Information Form” and “Semi-structured question form.” Content analysis was used to evaluate qualitative data, while descriptive statistical methods (frequency, percentage, and mean) were used to evaluate quantitative data. Results: Based on data analysis obtained from student interviews, two themes, five subthemes, and 19 codes were created. The sub-themes of ‘Effects on communication with the patient’, ‘Effects on clinical skills’ and ‘Effects on theoretical/practical knowledge’ were created related to the theme of the effects of being away from clinical practices during the pandemic. The sub-themes ‘Positive thoughts’ and ‘Negative thoughts’ were created related to the theme of students' thoughts on their willingness to care. Conclusions: Research shows that students' desire to care for patients increased significantly after returning to the clinical environment following the pandemic.
