The Relationship Between Mindfulness, Perceptions of Spirituality and Spiritual Care, and Spiritual Care Competence among Senior Nursing Students: A Cross-sectional Study with Mediation Analysis
Öz
Objective: This research aims to examine the relationship between mindfulness and spiritual care competence among senior nursing students and highlight the mediating role of perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care in this relationship. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted. The data was collected via an online survey from 522 senior nursing students in the five health sciences faculty nursing departments in Türkiye between May 15 and July 15, 2023. The questionnaires consisted of a structured information form, the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale, and Spiritual Care Competence Scale. Pearson correlation analyses were used to examine the relationship between variables, and mediation analyses were applied to highlight the mediating role of perception of spirituality and spiritual care in this relationship. Results: There was a positive, statistically significant correlation between mindfulness, perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care, and spiritual care competence (p< 0.001). Meanwhile, the mediation model showed that the direct effect of mindfulness (β=0.235) and perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care (β=0.564) on spiritual care competence was statistically significant (p<0.001). In addition, perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care partially mediated the relationship between mindfulness and spiritual care competence (β=0.238, 95% CI, 0.123 - 0.352). Conclusion: Spiritual care competence among senior nursing students could be enhanced by mindfulness through the mediating role of perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care. Nursing institutions and organizations should focus more on fostering mindfulness and broadening perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care to enhance spiritual care competence among students.
