Are Nurses Ready for Disasters? A Qualitative Study on Disaster Nursing Competencies in Türkiye

Öz

Objective: This study aimed to identify nurses' competencies in disaster-related nursing services, determine the necessary arrangements to improve the quality of care, explore the challenges encountered in providing these services, and propose potential solutions. Methods: A qualitative research design was employed in this study, conducted with 17 nurses actively working in a hospital in Türkiye. Data were collected in September 2024 using a personal information form and a semi-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed through content analysis using MAXQDA software. Results: Four main themes emerged from the data analysis: nurses' competencies in disaster situations, necessary arrangements to improve the quality of nursing care in disasters, potential challenges in the provision of nursing services during disasters, and obstacles faced by disaster nurses. Conclusion: The findings indicate that nurses’ disaster-related competencies need to be improved through continuous training programs, adequate resource allocation, and effective preparedness planning to meet basic needs.
