Sağlık Bilimleri Öğrencilerinde Yeni Medya Okuryazarlığı ile Yabancı Düşmanlığı Arasındaki İlişki: Kesitsel ve İlişkisel Bir Çalışma

Öz

Amaç: Sağlık bilimleri öğrencilerinin yeni medya okuryazarlığı ile yabancı düşmanlığı düzeylerini belirlemek; yeni medya okuryazarlığı ve medya kullanım özelliklerinin yabancı düşmanlığı ile dile dayalı klinik ayrımcılık üzerindeki etkisini incelemektir. Yöntem: Kesitsel ve ilişkisel tasarımdaki bu araştırmada, bir devlet üniversitesinin sağlık bilimleri fakültesinde öğrenim gören lisans öğrencilerinden kolayda örnekleme yöntemiyle veri toplanmıştır. Katılımcılar Yeni Medya Okuryazarlığı Ölçeği, Yabancı Düşmanlığı Ölçeği ve sosyodemografik ile medya kullanım özelliklerini içeren anket formu doldurmuştur. Analitik örneklem 354 öğrenciden oluşmuştur. Bulgular: Yeni medya okuryazarlığı ile yabancı düşmanlığı arasında eleştirel boyutlardan ziyade fonksiyonel alt boyutların yönlendirdiği küçük ama pozitif yönlü anlamlı bir ilişki saptanmıştır (r = .16, p = .003); dört alt boyut birlikte varyansın %3.6'sını açıklamıştır. Yabancı düşmanlığının en güçlü ilişkili olduğu değişken, sosyal medyada göçmenlerle ilgili olumsuz içeriklerden etkilenme durumudur (p < .001). Yabancı/göçmen bir arkadaşa sahip olmak anlamlı bir farklılık yaratmazken, eleştirel medya okuryazarlığı dile dayalı tedavi önceliği belirleme tutumuna karşı koruyucu ancak istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmayan bir eğilim göstermiştir (OR = 0.45, p = .106). Ölçüm araçları, yüksek iç tutarlılık güvenirliği ile güçlü psikometrik özellikler sergilemiştir. Sonuç: Yeni medyadaki teknik akıcılık yabancı düşmanlığına karşı koruma sağlamamakta, maruz kalınan içeriğin niteliği daha büyük önem taşımaktadır. Müfredatlar, teknik eğitimden ziyade transkültürel etik eğitimine entegre edilmiş eleştirel dijital medya okuryazarlığına doğru kaydırılmalıdır.

The Relationship Between New Media Literacy and Xenophobia Among Health Sciences Students: A Cross-Sectional Correlational Study

Öz

Aim: To determine health-sciences students’ new media literacy and xenophobia levels and to examine the effect of new media literacy and media-use characteristics on xenophobia and language-based clinical discrimination. Methods: In this cross-sectional, correlational study, a convenience sample of undergraduate health-sciences students completed the New Media Literacy Scale, the Xenophobia Scale, and a sociodemographic and media-use questionnaire form. The analytic sample comprised 354 students. Results: A small positive significant association was found between new media literacy and xenophobia (r=.16,p=.003), driven by functional rather than critical sub-dimensions; the four sub-dimensions jointly explained 3.6% of the variance. The strongest correlate of xenophobia was being affected by negative immigrant-related content on social media (p<.001). Having a foreign/immigrant friend did not create a significant difference, whereas critical media literacy showed a protective but non-significant trend against language-based treatment prioritization (OR=0.45,p=.106). The measurement instruments demonstrated strong psychometric properties with high internal-consistency reliability. Conclusions: Technical fluency with new media does not protect against xenophobia; the valence of encountered content matters more. Curricula should shift from technical training toward critical digital media literacy embedded in transcultural ethics education.
