Evaluation of patients undergoing vertebroplasty: a single-center experience

Öz

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the demographic, clinical and radiological characteristics of patients who underwent vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty due to vertebral fractures in our clinic and to present our results in comparison with the literature.
Materials and methods: A total of 141 patients who underwent vertebroplasty (n=92) or kyphoplasty (n=49) due to vertebral fractures between 2013 and 2024 were retrospectively analyzed. Parameters such as age, sex, number of fractures, treated level, type of pathology, comorbidities, history of trauma, presenting symptoms, and radiological height loss during follow-up were evaluated.
Results: Of the total 141 patients, 65.2% underwent vertebroplasty and 34.8% underwent kyphoplasty. The mean age of the patients was 64.91±14.07 years (range: 20-92 years). The proportion of female patients was 56.7% (n=80), while male patients accounted for 43.3% (n=61). Pathological diagnosis revealed that 79.4% of the fractures were osteoporotic or bone- related in origin. A history of trauma was present in 41.8% of the patients. The most frequently affected vertebral level was L1, observed in 23.4% of cases. Single-level fractures were present in 86.4% of the patients. The main complaint in all patients was pain. Additionally, 71.6% of the patients had at least one comorbidity. A history of trauma was significantly more common in osteoporotic (bone-related) fractures (p<0.001), whereas it was less frequently observed in the tumor group.
Conclusion: The choice of treatment should be individualized based on the underlying pathology and radiological findings. Effective pain control and reduction in the use of analgesics are crucial for significantly improving quality of life and enabling an earlier return to daily activities.
