LUPUS OF FERRIERES AND THE CAROLINGIAN WORLD IN THE LIGHT OF LETTERS

Öz

Lupus Servatus, also known as Lupus of Ferrières, was born in 805 to a Bavarian father and a Frankish mother. At an early age, he was sent to the monastery of Ferrières near Paris as a student. His life, which lasted until 862, was remarkably productive both in literary and administrative terms. He initially served in the advisory council of the Carolingian Emperor Louis the Pious and later in that of his son, Charles the Bald, King of West Francia. A substantial number of letters written by Lupus or addressed to him have survived to the present day, encompassing a wide range of topics, including intellectual, military, political, and religious matters. Lupus’ participation in the civil war that culminated in the fragmentation of the Carolingian Empire renders his letters invaluable sources for understanding 9th-century Francia. Moreover, his involvement in the predestination controversy led by Gottschalk of Orbais and the early Viking incursions further enhances the significance of his correspondence. This study aims to analyze Lupus’ letters to shed light on his character, relationships, and the socio-political and intellectual context of the Carolingian Empire during the 9th century.

MEKTUPLARIN IŞIĞINDA FERRİERESLİ LUPUS VE KAROLENJ DÜNYASI

Öz

Tam adı Lupus Servatus olan Ferrieres’li Lupus, 805 yılında Bavyeralı bir babanın ve Frank bir annenin oğlu olarak dünyaya gelmiştir. Erken yaşlarda Paris yakınlardaki Ferrieres manastırına öğrenci olarak verilmiştir. 862 yılına kadar geçen ömrü gerek edebi gerek idari anlamda bir hayli üretken geçmiştir. İlk önce Karolenj İmparatoru Ludovicus’un sonrasında da onun oğlu Batı Frankia Kral Karl’ın danışma meclisinde yer almıştır. Hayatı süresince kaleme aldığı ve ona yazılan çok sayıda mektup günümüze ulaşmıştır. Bu mektuplar entelektüel, askeri, siyasi ve dini başta olmak üzere birçok farklı konudadır. Karolenj İmparatorluğu’nun parçalanması ile sonuçlanan iç savaşta yer alan biri olması Lupus’un mektuplarını IX. yüzyıl Frankiası’nın anlaşılması için çok değerli bir eser haline getirmektedir. Ayrıca Orbais’li Godescalcus’un kader tartışması ve Viking Çağı’nın başlangıcı Lupus’un mektuplarının önemini arttırmaktadır. Çalışmada Lupus’un mektuplarından yola çıkılarak karakteri, ilişkileri ve IX. yüzyıldaki Karolenj İmparatorluğu’nun askeri, siyasi, entelektüel ve diplomatik durumunun anlaşılması amaçlanmaktadır.
