The loss of a loved one is one of the most stressful and traumatic events a child or adolescent can experience, and this situation is associated with negative outcomes, including mental and physical disorders, as well as various life problems that can affect long-term development. In this regard, understanding the stages of grief, the tasks of mourning, and the factors that influence grief forms the foundation for comprehending grief in children and adolescents. It is also important to differentiate grief responses and the meanings attributed to death within the framework of developmental stages to understand and clinically define grief reactions during childhood and adolescence. Prolonged Grief Disorder in children is often observed in conjunction with other mental health disorders and is associated with increased distress and functional impairment. Similar to adults, children respond well to supportive interventions and evidence-based treatments specific to the grieving process. Although there are several intervention methods for children and adolescents experiencing grief, it is notable that the evidence supporting these methods is limited. It is clear that with increased research focusing on the underlying mechanisms and risk factors of complicated grief among children and adolescents, along with the rise of evidence-based interventions, more specific findings will emerge.
